Steph Auteri has been writing about sex for almost 20 years and has been published in the Atlantic, the Washington Post, VICE, Pacific Standard, and elsewhere. She is the author of A Dirty Word, a reported memoir about the ways in which our culture treats female sexuality like a dirty word. Steph is the creator of Guerrilla Sex Ed, an online resource for those seeking out alternative sources of sex education. As part of her “Sex Educator Spotlight” interview series, Steph spoke with Kara about her work and Reframing our Stories.

On episode 116 of the Mama Bear Dares Podcast, Hosts Tesi and Leslie sit down with Kara - they acknowledge that God created sexual intimacy and celebrate the idea that the human body is beautiful and to be celebrated and enjoyed, and discuss the most effective ways to teach the next generation to engage in healthy and meaningful sexual activity. Kara shares her background and path that led to her work as a Sexuality Health educator and counselor in reducing shame and guilt in conversations on episode 32 of Tami Hackbarth’s 100% Guild-Free Self-Care Podcast. They met when Kara taught a class at Tami’s preschooler’s parent group, discussing how to talk with young kids about loving their bodies.

Host Jessa Zimmerman talks with Kara about the fairytale misconceptions that all women often face in their daily lives. Because there are cultural reinforcements that peg a certain brand of story for women, many are going into marriages and motherhood with inflated expectations, only to find that things are much more challenging than they originally thought they would be. Episode 91 explores this topic and offers some solutions for women who are struggling.

Discussing the need to bring sexuality into the conversation at churches, Kara examines our relationship with God and the church, and provides examples and actions for church leaders to consider in helping people bring their whole selves to church.
